FROM KUPANG to ISLAND OF ALOR, INDONESIA … DEPARTING KUPANG 31ST JULY 2007 …

CITY OF `KALABAHI’, ISLAND OF ALOR …  POSITION: 08˚ 13 E … 124˚ 30

Melanie and I, transported by Déjà vu III, left Kupang, West Timor, on the 31st July ’07, for the Island of ALOR … a 150 nmiles overnight trip. No worries at all apart from the reaction to me closing a hatch on a jib-line and therefore, creating a very badly sealing hatch against seawater entry.

* ISLAND OF ALOR – INDONESIA … FISHING BOAT! *

Approaching the passage up to the island of Alor, was an interesting experience with the in-famous tidal movements of Indonesia.

At one point I had both motors working at 3500 rpm (about ¾ throttle opening … meaning a BIG increase in fuel consumption) and Déjà vu was barely making 1.3 knots … meaning we were battling an outgoing tide of 4-6 knots … nasty!

This lasted two hours and suddenly the Gods swung the tide around and we were suddenly speeding along at 9 knots. Fighting the tide is a very expensive and a slow way to move around the waters!

* ALOR – INDONESIA – THERE’S NO BOAT RAMP … BUT, THERE’S ALWAYS A WAY!

The locals had constructed a floating dinghy landing jetty from large plastic bottles and planks … a good effort … it just meant being very, very careful walking down the planks, as they tended to take on the action of a see-saw!

We’ve had a few accidents in the fleet … a woman fell today and dislocated her shoulder … another contracted Malaria … a third woman slipped on a sloping footpath in Kupang and broke her leg in two places … and two guys crashed a scooter in Kupang, one seriously head-injured and had to be flown home. There are risks!

* MELANIE WITH A LOCAL `WARRIOR’. *

After Alor I will do short one-day journeys, as my crew `promise’ from Darwin, fell through. People can be SO unreliable.

This young woman in Darwin (one of the Rally volunteers) was looking for a crewing position from Kupang through to Singapore … so I offered her a position on Déjà vu. Come Kupang she advises me she had received a better offer of a month’s accommodation on ALOR … so our arrangement was `out-the-window’! BITCH!
