SAIL MALAYSIA EASTERN PASSAGE RALLY 2009 – 3RD MAY – 2ND AUGUST 2009

My long-term plan is to sail from Phuket, Thailand, West through Sri Lanka … India … Maldives … Yemen? … Oman … The Red Sea … Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean.

To have favorable winds (NE’er to push us across the Indian Ocean) I and many cruisers, will wait until Dec/Jan/Feb to commence this crossing. Therefore, I have ten months `to-kill’ … before this crossing start time!

Rallies are good! You meet and make new friends … have the opportunity to investigate a great number of different yachts, both mono and catamaran configurations … and of course to experience new sights ashore.

I had recently completed the Sail Indonesia Rally 2007 … from Darwin, Australia, through to Singapore … and it seemed a good idea to take on another Rally (Sail Malaysia Eastern Passage 2009) … which commenced at Penang, Malaysia, on the 3rd May and finished at Kota Kinabalu (KK), Sabah, (Borneo) … on the 2nd August 2009.

This was a three month Rally and meant Déjà vu would be asked to cover a distance of 2,100nmiles to reach KK and then return … a long, long way.

Penang is on the West coast of the Malaysian peninsular (about 80nm south of Langkawi … still none the wiser aye?) … and the Rally sails down to Johor Bahru, Malaysia (across a narrow strait from Singapore.) As there’s an earthen causeway between the two countries (the same causeway the Japanese crossed to invade Singapore through WW2) it’s not possible to sail through the strait north of Singapore, to reach the Malaysian Marina of Sebana Cove. All water bound vessels must sail south of Singapore and then north along the east coast to Sebana Cove Marina. This 45 nmiles journey is an exciting experience in itself … as you must negotiate through approx. 750 very large anchored and mobile ships, plus a fleet of fast moving ferries. There’s another Chapter coming on that place in time!

From Sebana Cove the fleet sails/motors north, up the east coast of Malaysia, to a town named Terengganu. Then, across the South China Sea (over 500nm) to the Sarawak City of Kuching. From Kuching … up the West coast of Borneo (Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah) to the City of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. This Sarawak-Brunei-Sabah (and Indonesia) layout is very confusing until you are forced to work-it-out (for navigation purposes) … and it evolves all these States/Countries are on the one plot of land … BORNEO ISLAND! And this Island is shared by three countries … Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia! Wish I had the patience to read the history of how that occurred!

The Rally finished with a BANG-of–a-PARTY at the Marina/Resort of Sutera Harbour, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo … on the 2nd August, 2009.

You thought that little write-up was all there is, right. Wrong … it’s only the preamble!!
